This publication explains how to use Cash App without SSN. If for whatever reason, you don’t have a Social Security number (SSN) but need to use Cash App, this guide is for you.
Cash App is a mobile payments app that allows you to conveniently send and receive money online in the US and UK. Unfortunately, Cash App does not work in other countries, including Canada.
You’re also allowed to load your preferred currency such as dollars or euros to send to other people on Cash App. However, without SSN, you’ll face Cash App limits. The good news: Cash App does not force it on people. You can even sign up on Cash App without your SSN.
What’s a SSN number?
The Social Security number (SSN) was primarily created to help track the earnings histories of workers in the US to determine Social Security benefit entitlement and computing benefit levels.
However, SSN is now being used today as a numbering system in the United States and almost all legal residents of the United States have SSN. Currently, SSN now serves as a means of identification that helps to gather information about a US resident.
SSN usually has 9-digit numbers and is typically issued to citizens born in the US after birth. US immigrant residents are also eligible to get SSN under certain circumstances.
In essence, SSN is an important identification number in the US. And if you don’t have SSN, you need to apply for one as proof of US citizenship or immigration status. You can refer to the SSA website for more information.
Why does Cash App need my SSN?
Cash App needs your SSN to verify your identity. Otherwise, you will not have access to certain Cash App features (such as sending limit) until your identity is verified.
Cash App asking for your SSN comes with good intentions, and it is completely safe to share your SSN with Cash App. It also helps Cash App to fight fraudulent users and scams on the platform when they can identify a particular user.
Even though Cash App needs your SSN to verify your identity, you’re not forced to provide it. You can even sign up on Cash App without an SSN as an unverified user. But if you’d rather become a verified user, then you have to provide your SSN for identity verification.
An unverified Cash App user can still send and receive funds via the app but Cash App places a restriction on the amount of money you can send.
Usually, without SSN, you can’t send more than $250 on Cash App within 7 days. Also, you can’t receive more than $1,000 within 7 days as an unverified Cash App user.

First, sign into your Cash App account. If you don’t have an account, visit the cash.app website or download the app and create an account using your email address.

- Navigate to the Send Money tab.
- Select I don’t have a SSN.

- The recipient will receive a verification code and will enter the code into the verification box to complete the transaction.
If using this method, make sure not to exceed the sending or receiving limit for your 7-day period since you have an unverified account. Check your transaction history for the last 7 days to be sure you’ve not exceeded the limit already.
2. Send below $250 or receive below $1,000
Your next option is to stay below $250 (weekly sending limit) or $1,000 (monthly receiving limit) to use Cash App without SSN. Do the following:
- Open the Cash App on your device and sign in.
- Tap the $ sign.
- Tao the Send button.
- Enter the amount to send, making sure it’s below $250 within the last 7 days.
- Select your recipient from your contact list and tap the Send button to transfer the funds on Cash App without SSN.
SSN might be an important means of user identification but Cash App is not making it a mandatory requirement for you to send and receive money in the supported countries—UK and US.
